Fonterutoli Italy

Fonterutoli (pronounce Fonterùtoli) is a hamlet of the Italian municipality of Castellina in Chianti, in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It is located in the heart of the Chianti area, along State Road 222 'Chiantigiana' just beyond Castellina in Chianti, in the direction of Siena. From here you can enjoy a unique panorama, seeing Siena and overlooking the landscape of the Valdelsa Senese. The locality has such ancient origins that it was already known in Etruscan and Roman times ('Fons Rutolae' and 'Fons Rutilant'). In 998, as also recalled by a plaque in the centre of the village, Otto III put an end to the disputes between the powerful dioceses of Siena, Fiesole and Arezzo, establishing borders and possessions. During the wars between Siena and Florence, it was the site of the agreements that put an end to the dispute over the Chianti territories. It is said that according to the agreements, the boundary was to be established at the meeting point between a Florentine knight and a Sienese knight who were to leave their respective cities at the first cockcrow: the meeting between the two knights was to take place near Fonterutoli. The castle of Fonterutoli is owned by the family of the Marquis Mazzei, who settled there as early as 1435. Its appearance has not changed much over the centuries, preserving some original buildings. Only the original castle was replaced by the manor house at the end of the 16th century.
